Zinnanti Surgical is known for developing specialty devices that overcome challenges in surgery by combining multiple functions into one instrument. Our design team is headed by Dr. William Zinnanti. As a physician-scientist, Dr. Zinnanti has a unique approach to assessing challenges and developing solutions that can then be validated for safety and efficacy.

Dr. Zinnanti has over 25 years of experience in developing and manufacturing surgical devices. He currently holds nine issued patents, with several more pending in the United States and worldwide. He is also a licensed practicing physician in neurology and rare diseases. This combination of education, training, experience, and opportunities provides the basis for continued innovation.

The most common comment we hear from surgeons evaluating our devices for the first time is, “Wow, why didn’t anyone come up with this before?”

Women’s Health – LEEP Excision or ablation of cervical precancerous lesions

Our Loop Electrodes collect their own smoke, directly from the surgical site, with loops and ablative electrodes that suction through the shaft. This means less equipment, better visualization, and faster, more effective procedures. There’s no need for a speculum with a smoke tube.

LEEP speculums often fail to consistently collect smoke, as loose soft tissue may occlude the smoke tube, preventing proper evacuation. The position of traditional smoke tubes can cause smoke to rise and obscure the view before being collected. Our simple loop electrode design allows for simultaneous smoke collection while cutting. The loop electrode can then be swapped out for our suction coagulation tip, which collects blood, fluid, and smoke while cauterizing the crater after LEEP.

HRA – High Resolution Anoscopy Ablation of Precancerous Lesions

High-risk HPV infections are known to cause precancerous lesions in susceptible tissues, such as the anal, oral, and vaginal cavities. These lesions disproportionately affect women and men who have sex with men. In cases of coinfection with HIV, these lesions develop more rapidly. Recent studies have shown that surveillance and ablation treatments of these precancerous lesions can reduce and prevent progression to cancer. The procedure is performed using laser, infrared coagulation, or electrosurgical ablation.

This procedure is conducted through an anoscope under magnification. The available space within an anoscope is extremely limited, and smoke from ablation completely obscures the view. The operator must wait for the smoke to clear using a vacuum source outside of the anoscope, significantly extending operative time. Leadership from the International Anal Neoplasia Society (IANS) highlighted this challenge, and Zinnanti Surgical provided a solution.

We developed ablation treatment tips that collect smoke before it can be seen, allowing the operator to complete treatment in about one-fifth of the time, as reported by Dr. Stephen Goldstone. The invention, development, and widespread use of these special ablation tips enabled the IANS team, through the ANCHOR Trial, to complete treatments in enough patients to demonstrate statistically significant arrest of progression and prevention of conversion to anal cancer, as reported by Dr. Joel Palefsky, lead author of the landmark publication in the New England Journal of Medicine (Palefsky et al., 2022 Jun 16, 386(24):2273-2282, doi: 10.1056/NEJMoa2202048).

Dermatology

In recent years, the harmful effects of breathing surgical smoke have been well documented. During the COVID-19 pandemic, providers became more aware of respiratory illnesses associated with surgical smoke and the potential for it to carry viruses. Dermatologists commonly use a Hyfrecator or high-frequency desiccator system in outpatient settings for procedures such as Mohs micrographic surgery.

Zinnanti Surgical developed a smoke evacuation system specifically designed to fit a Hyfrecator or other high-frequency desiccators. Our customers appreciate the efficiency of combined functionality and the low cost. Our smoke evacuation system allows the operator to perform cautery and suction with one hand, eliminating the need for someone to hold a suction tube over the surgical site.

Enhancing Surgical Efficiency

We know that in the fast-paced world of healthcare, every second counts. That’s why our devices are designed to be fast, easy, and convenient. By offering disposable attachments, we remove the hassle of sterilization, letting surgeons concentrate on what truly matters: patient care.
